“STREAM lines,” featuring Art and the River

The Geoffrey Young Gallery will feature local artists in a special show, “STREAM lines,” from June 10th -24th. In conjunction with other Great Barrington galleries, the opening reception will take place on Saturday, June 12, 2004, from 5:30-7:30 pm at 40 Railroad Street, 2nd floor. All are invited.

The show will present many of the artists whose work is contained in the newly published book, “Art and the River.” The publication highlights the influence of the Housatonic River on local artists. There will be a book party for “Art & the River” at the closing of the show, on Thursday, June 24, 2004, 5:30-7:30 pm.

“Art and the River” contains essays by Nancy Goldberger, Maureen Hickey, Erik Bruun, Rachel Fletcher, George Wislocki, Morgan Bulkeley Sr., and Geoffrey Young.

Artists in the show include: Emily Buchanan, Joan Griswold, Gabrielle Senza, Ann Getsinger, Pat Hogan, Helen Nichols Jacobs, Erica Child Prud'homme, June Parker, Margot Trout, Morgan Bulkeley, Bart Elsbach, Frank Federico, Warner Friedman, Donald Jurney, David McCandless, Geoffrey Moss, Philip Knoll & Jim Schantz, and James Welling.

“Artists who take a measure of their inspiration from the Housatonic River strive to capture the lingering atmospheric light that mirrors the shoreline’s vegetation, the kind of thing we might see from a passing car window, or while hiking, or from the bow of a canoe moving quietly. We reach for our camera to preserve the shimmering reflection of trees in water, knowing that the fleeting Edenic moment soon passes when light and the things it hits
are at their maximum saturation.” GY
